Del Mar 2-year-olds: Mind Out leads a turf trio to know
Turf sprints for the 2-year-olds were highlighted at Del Mar last week. Mind Out, a long-striding daughter of Tapit, is one to watch when she stretches out for trainer Simon Callaghan, and she might handle the dirt given her bloodlines, too. We'll start with her in introducing these new juvenile winners...
MIND OUT
(Tapit - Kid Majic, by Lemon Drop Kid)
Last Wednesday, Mind Out lived up to her $850,000 Fasig-Tipton August Yearling price tag in her five-furlong turf debut. She was off slow but went on to circle the field and win by 3/4 of a length, galloping out much the best. The final time was :57.17.
Pedigree: Mind Out may has the pedigree and conformation to handle middle to classic distances. The large chestnut filly shows a smooth, powerful stride and may be just as effective on dirt. Mind Out is a half-sister to Grade 2-winning sprinter Miss Mischief, and another half-sister bore Rowayton, who finished in the money in last year’s Del Mar Futurity (G1), American Pharoah Stakes (G1) and just missed in last weekend's H. Allen Jerkens (G1). Mind Out’s dam, a stakes-placed miler, is a half-sister to J P's Gusto, the precocious winner of the Del Mar Futurity, Best Pal (G2) and Hollywood Juvenile Championship (G3). Stakes-winning turf miler Swagger Jagger and stakes-winning sprinter Trigger Warning are part of the family. This is the distaff line of 2008 Champion 3-Year-Old Filly, Proud Spell.
Pedigree: Strongconstitution has a sprinter/miler pedigree. His first crop sire now has two winners and and a runner-up from four turf starters. Strongconstitution’s half-sister, Four Inch Heels, is a listed-placed sprinter, as is their dam. They own the only blacktype in three generations of the distaff line.
GREG’S
DIVA
(Shackleford – Diva From Dixie, by Dixieland Band)
Making her second start, the Philip D’Amato trainee battled on the lead, then pulled away to score by 1 1/4 lengths on Friday. She finished five furlongs over the turf in :56.64.
Pedigree: Greg’s Diva has a sprinter/miler pedigree. The blacktype earners in the second generation include Grade 3 miler Paladin Bay. The third dam is multiple graded stakes winner Possible Mate, who earned over $675,000 in 29 starts.
