The
Frizette Stakes was supposed to be a match up between the undefeated graded
stakes winners Cavorting and Condo Commando.
However, neither filly had an answer for an overlooked long shot. By the Moon took revenge on even money
favorite CONDO COMMANDO in the one mile Grade One contest at Belmont
Park.
Racing over
a sloppy track, By the Moon broke sharply and argued early with CAVORTING, but was content to let that rival lead the way for
much of the race while sitting comfortably behind Cavorting by a length. The previously undefeated Condo Commando
raced three wide much of the way in third place with Feathered to her inside. By the half mile pole, Joe Bravo was scrubbing
the neck of Condo Commando and the filly lengthened stride, but appeared to be
going nowhere fast as she drifted out in the stretch. Cornelio Velasquez smacked By the Moon a
couple of times and the filly opened up in mid-stretch. WONDER GAL and FEATHERED took up the
chase, but never gained much ground as By the Moon flashed under the wire by about
a length. The final race time was 1:39.2/5.
By The Moon
rewarded her backers with $50.50, $17.40
and $7.20; Wonder Gal paid $8.40, $3.90 and Feathered returned $4.10.
Trained by
Michelle Nevin, BY THE MOON (Indian Charlie - By the Light, by Malibu Moon) was
three and four wide in the Spinaway and was no match for Condo Commando. Her
precocious dam won all four starts at two, and is a multiple stakes earner of
almost $900K as a sprinter/miler. Jay Em
Ess Stable owns By the Moon and Samantha Siegel bred her.
By the Moon’s
victory in the Frizette has earned her a spot in the starting gate of the
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
