Six royally-bred 2-year-old fillies lived up to expectations over the weekend, and they may make noise on the 2020 Kentucky Oaks trail. Steve Asmussen trained fillies completed the trifecta in the Trapeze Stakes at Remington Park, plus Freud of Mama and Cholula Lips kissed state-bred stakes rivals goodbye in New York and California, respectively, We'll also take a closer look at bloodlines of two highly regarded maidens who graduated at Aqueduct and Tampa Bay Downs.

PRINCESINHA JULIA

(Pioneerof the Nile - Love and Pride, by A.P. Indy)

The long-striding Princesinha Julia came from well off the pace to capture the Trapeze Stakes on Sunday's Springboard Mile undercard by an exciting half-length over Caribbean Sea, running a mile in 1:40.73.  The Steve Asmussen trainee won her last two starts, and it looks like he has yet another Oaks contender in the stable.

Pedigree: The rangy daughter of Pioneerof the Nile is just starting to mature, and she’s bred to run all day. Pioneerof the Nile was a stamina influence, and his untimely loss was devastating to fans and the breeding industry. Princesinha Julia is the third foal and first blacktype earner in the immediate family. Her dam, Love and Pride, captured the Zenyatta Stakes at 1 1/16 miles and the Personal Ensign and Obeah stakes, both at 1 1/8 miles,  as well as two listed stakes. She retired with earnings of $985,760 in 17 starts. Princesinha Julia’s second dam is a half-sister to Bernardini, and her third dam Cara Rafaela is a multiple graded stakes winner.

CARIBBEAN SEA

(Hard Spun - Sea Island, by Pulpit)

Caribbean Sea hit the front rounding the far turn in the Trapeze Stakes and looked like a winner, but was run down late by her stablemate Princesinha Julia. The pair outclassed the field, as it was five lengths back to third.

Pedigree: Caribbean Sea, a WinStar Farm homebred, is another late bloomer from the Asmussen barn. Like Princeshinha Julia, Caribbean Sea is bred to love longer distances. Hard Spun is having a phenomenal year as a sire. He’s ranked eighth on the national list by earnings. His offspring include this year’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile hero Spun to Run, Saratoga Special victor Green Light Go and Tepin Stakes winner Antoinette. Caribbean Sea is the first foal out of Grade 1-placed Sea Island to race. Sea Island, bred and campaigned by the Phipps Stable, is multiple graded stakes-placed between 1 1/16 miles and 1 1/8 miles. She earned $341,847 in 18 outings. Sea Island is a full sister to Peter Pan hero and sire Sightseeing. Caribbean Sea’s second dam Resort is multiple Grade 1-placed, and she’s a half-sister to the sire With Distinction.

A FREUD OF MAMA

(Freud - Mama Theresa, by Carson City)

A Freud of Mama splashed her way to a 1 1/2-length victory in the New York Stallion Series Fifth Avenue Stakes on Saturday at Aqueduct. The Mike Maker trainee traveled seven furlongs in 1:25.81. She previously placed third in the Grade 3 Matron at Belmont over the lawn.

Pedigree: A Freud of Mama has sprinter/miler breeding. When we think of New York-breds, we think of Freud, a full brother to Giant’s Causeway, who has been a leading sire in New York since 2007. His offspring include 2017 Cigar Mile hero Sharp Azteca, 2018 Flower Bowl heroine Fourstar Crook, and Franny Freud, a restricted stakes mare who evolved into a Grade 1 winner. A Freud of Mama is the first black type earner in her immediate family. Her dam a multiple stakes placed earner, is a half-sister to handicap veteran and sire Haynesfield. This is the distaff line of Belmont Stakes winner Touch Gold, Canadian Triple Crown hero With Approval, and multiple Grade 1 winning turf router Brilliant Speed.

CHOLULA LIPS

(Empire Way - Sweet Lips Pooh, by Rio Verde)

Cholula Lips earned her first stakes victory in the Soviet Problem Stakes for  California-bred fillies on Saturday at Los Alamitos. She tracked the early pace and zoomed around the turn, drawing off by three lengths. The Mike Harrington trainee traveled a mile in 1:37.85. Cholula Lips previously placed second in the Debutante Stakes at Churchill and the Generous Portion at Del Mar.

Pedigree: Cholula Lips has a sprinter/miler pedigree. She’s the first black type earner in her immediate family. Empire Way, a full brother to Champion Royal Delta, is the sire of two stakes winners, both sprinter/milers. Cholula Lips’ distaff line is filled with restricted black type. Her dam’s half-sister bore stakes-winning sprinter Go Lady Jay. Cholula Lips’ second dam, Air Force Woman, placed in the Generous Portion Stakes. She also has a full brother named Royal Irish, who won the Graduation Stakes at Del Mar. Cholula Lips has Rasmussen Factor breeding (inbred to a superior mare in five generations through siblings) to Proud Delta. She’s the third dam of Empire Way and is the dam of Proud Irish, Cholula Lips’ second damsire.

HARVEY'S LIL GOIL

(American Pharoah - Gloria S, by Tapit)

This pretty gray announced that dirt was her preferred running surface in a maiden event at Aqueduct. The Bill Mott trainee decimated the field by six lengths, traveling a mile in 1:39.13.

Pedigree: Harvey's Lil Goil has a classic-oriented pedigree. She’s the third foal and third winner in the immediate family, and the young family has yet to earn black type. Their dam is an unraced half-sister to Kentucky Derby victor I’ll Have Another and to Golden Award, a multiple graded winner for the Mott barn at 1 1/8 miles. Harvey's Lil Goil’s third dam is stakes-placed turf miler Force Five Gal. Beholder, Into Mischief, and Mendelssohn are distant relatives.

CORRECTNESS

(Medaglia d'Oro - Veracity, by Distorted Humor)

Correctness broke her maiden in her second start on Saturday over the Tampa Bay Downs turf course. The Arnaud Delacour trainee stalked the pace before grabbing the lead a furlong from home. The dark-bay filly drew off by 1 3/4 lengths, getting a mile in 1:37.71.

Pedigree: A $1 million Fasig-Tipton yearling purchased by Lael Stables, who campaigned Barbaro, Correctness has a middle distance/classic pedigree and may handle multiple surfaces. Although he’s sired some nice colts, Medaglia d'Oro is known as a “filly sire” due to the accomplishments of his daughters which include champions Songbird and Rachel Alexandra, plus Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner New Money Honey, Kentucky Oaks heroine Plum Pretty, multiple Grade 1 winner Elate...and the list goes on.

Correctness is a first foal. Her dam Veracity’s full sister Cherry, bore Elate, two-time winner of the Delaware Handicap. This means Correctness is known as a sister in blood to Elate because they are by the same sire out of full sisters. Veracity is a half-sister to Toll, the dam of Jim Dandy winner Tax. Correctness’ second dam, the Claiborne-bred Yell, is a multiple graded winning sprinter/miler who placed in the Kentucky Oaks and Mother Goose. This is the distaff line of sires Flatter, Congrats, Roar and Eastern Echo.
