Kentucky Derby Pedigree Profile-Super Ninety Nine

While the thunderclouds were busy dumping rain in Arkansas, Super Ninety Nine paid them no heed as he splashed his way to an emphathic 11 ¼ length victory in the Southwest Stakes (G-3) at Oaklawn Park on Monday. The well-bred colt gave Bob Baffert his third consecutive winner and fourth victory in five years in the Kentucky Derby prep race. Super Ninety Nine made all of the pace under Rafael Bejarano, traveling the 1 1/6 miles in 1:41.84. This is the first year that the Southwest has been held at the distance. Formerly it was contested at a mile. Fear the Kitten was a distant second and Heaven's Runway was 2 ¼ lengths behind that rival in third.

SUPER NINETY NINE (Pulpit - Exogenetic, by Unbridled's Song) went through the auction ring twice. He was a $200K purchase at the Keeneland September yearling sale in 2011. Last year, the son of Pulpit sold for $260K to Tanma Corporation at the OBS June two year olds in training sale. He was one of eight colts to work a furlong in :10 flat.
Super Ninety Nine won his debut last October by 1 ¼ lengths. He then placed second behind Really Mr. Greeley in the Hollywood Prevue. The Chestnut colt was entered in the Breeders' Cup Sprint, but was scratched after becoming cast in his stall. He finished off of the board in his final start as a two year old. This year, Super Ninety Nine is undefeated in two starts and he's compiled a race record of 5-3-1-0 ($266,480). He's earned ten points in the Kentucky Derby points system.
Sire:
Super Ninety Nine's recently deceased sire Pulpit is internationally recognized as a sire of sires. His dirt offspring are best as sprinters to middle distance runners; however, Pulpit is represented by two dirt stakes winners at 1 ¼ miles or farther, Devil's Preacher and Pit Fighter. Both are out of Danzig sire line broodmares. So far, Pulpit hasn't sired a Champion or Classic winner. His son Ice Box came closest to the feat, finishing second in the 2010 Kentucky Derby.
Pulpit (A.P. Indy - Preach, by Mr. Prospector)
Race Record: 6-4-1-0 ($728,200)
Career Highlights:
1st – Fountain of Youth Stakes (G-2) 1 1/16 miles
1st – Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G-2) 1 1/8 miles
2nd – Florida Derby (G-1) 1 1/8 miles
Female Family:
Super Ninety Nine's half sister Elusive Horizon (by Elusive Quality) is a multiple listed stakes winner in Washington. She has been successful from five furlongs to 1 1/8 miles over dirt. Their dam Exogenetic is an unraced 3/4 sister to Exogenous (by Unbridled), winner of the Beldame and Gazelle Handicaps, both G-1 races. Exogenous also placed in the 1 1/4 mile Alabama Stakes and
1 1/2 mile CCA Oaks, as well as the 1 1/8 mile Mother Goose Stakes. All are G-1 races.
Exogenetic bore six foals of racing age. Five have made it to the track and all five are winners. Two are stakes winners. She has a Curlin two year old, a Quality Road yearling and will have a Smart Strike foal this year.
Super Ninety Nine's second dam Tangled Up In Blue (by Phone Trick) won three of seven starts as the allowance level. His third dam Count On Cathy (by Dancing Count) was stakes placed and is the grand-dam of 1997 Champion Two Year Old Filly Countess Diana. Super Ninety Nine's fourth dam, the stakes winning War Exchange (by Wise Exchange) is also the third dam of two-time Champ Curlin.

Damsire:
Super Ninety Nine's damsire Unbridled’s Song won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in only his third start. He was victorious in the Florida Derby and Wood Memorial, but suffered a quarter-crack before the Kentucky Derby. Like so many favorites in the Kentucky Derby, Unbridled's Song finished off of the board. The huge gray colt visited the winner's circle only once more. In his only start as a four year old, Unbridled's Song beat two over matched runners in a seven furlong handicap.
Unbridled’s Song is a popular stallion and noted as a sire of sires. His offspring tend to be extremely talented but fragile. A producer of 90 stakes winners, Unbridled's Song's progeny win at all distances over all surfaces, although they tend to be better suited to dirt and grass rather than synthetics. He's represented by five stakes winners at 1 ¼ miles over dirt.
Unbridled’s Song is a very proficient broodmare sire. It appears that he transfers more speed than stamina to his daughter's offspring. His daughters have produced 55 stakes winners, six of whom are winners at 1 1/14 miles; however, these victories came over turf and Polytrack. Additionally, only four of his daughter's offspring have won a stakes race at 1 1/8 miles over dirt.
UNBRIDLED’S SONG (Unbridled – Trolly Song, by Caro)
Race Record: 12-5-4-0 ($1,311,800)
Career Highlights:
1st - Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G-1) 1 1/16 miles
1st - Florida Derby (G-1) 1 1/8 miles
1st - Wood Memorial Stakes (G-2) 1 1/8 miles
1st - Olympic Handicap 7F
2nd - Hutcheson Stakes (G-2) 7F
2nd - Fountain of Youth Stakes (G-2) 1 1/6 miles
2nd - Peter Pan Stakes (G-2) 1 1/8 miles
Super Ninety Nine's second damsire Phone Trick was a brilliant sprinter. He won nine of ten starts and finished second to the Champion Sprinter Groovy in his last start. Phone Trick was a very capable stallion. His best offspring include Horse of the Year Favorite Trick, Champion Filly Phone Chatter and Dubai Golden Shaheen hero Caller One.
Summary:
Super Ninety Nine has a high cruising speed. He has a deceptively long, efficient gait and stretches his head and body out as he gallops along. The bright Chestnut colt appears to be powerfully built, with a thick neck, shoulders of a linebacker and huge hindquarters, not unlike his distant relative, Curlin.

Bred on the same Pulpit/Unbridled cross as Wood Memorial hero and popular sire Tapit, Super Ninety Nine has the pedigree to handle 1 1/8 miles, but his pedigree is borderline for 1 1/4 miles. His efficient stride and high cruising speed will make Super ninety Nine a dangerous foe in upcoming Triple Crown preps and his apparent aptitude for the mud could be a major factor if rain is in the forecast on the first Saturday in May. Trainer Bob Baffert is no stranger to the Churchill Downs winner's circle, so his training may help Super Ninety Nine overcome his pedigree short-comings.
