If
any colt had a built-in excuse to lose Saturday's Blue
Grass Stakes (G-1) at Keeneland, it was Java's War. Trouble
started when he hesitated coming out of the gate spotting the rest of
the field about three lengths. He trailed last of 14, 3 ½ lengths
behind the back of the pack through the first quarter. After a half
mile, he still sat at the back of the pack, largely forgotten, and at
the ¾ pole he'd made up only three lengths. Meanwhile at the other
end of the field, the favorite Rydilluc
and Uncaptured
were setting a moderate pace of :23.81, :48.04 and 1:12.76. Java's
War finally kicked it into gear rounding the far turn. He went wide
enough for his jockey Julien
Leparoux to grab a Keeneland Breeze drink out of the hands of a
racegoer at the apron rail. Down the stretch, the Kenny
McPeek trainee appeared to hesitate slightly, then raced in
tandem with Palace
Malice, before edging ahead of that rival by a long neck at the
finish line. Palace Malice, was a neck in front of the show horse
Charming
Kitten. The final time for the Blue Grass was 1:50.27 over the
Polytrack. Java's War ran his last 1/8 mile in :12.15 seconds. The
final time of the Blue Grass was comparable to the 1:50.92 time set
by Brilliant Speed in 2011, but about three seconds off of Dullahan's
1:47.94 last year – which is the fastest Blue Grass Stakes time
recorded since the switch to Polytrack. Java's War earned 100 Derby
points and now has 122 points, placing him at #4 on the leader
board.
JAVA'S
WAR
(War Pass - Java, by Rainbow Quest) is a home-bred colt owned by
Charles
Fipke. Mr. Fipke purchased the colt's dam Java in foal to War
Pass out of the Keeneland November '09 sale for $350K.
Sire:
Java's
War is by 2007 Juvenile Champion War Pass, who sired only two crops
before his untimely death in 2010. War Pass was a brilliant two year
old who entered the Breeders' Cup Juvenile undefeated after
dominating front-running scores in his debut, an allowance race and
the Champagne Stakes. The son of Cherokee Run splashed his way to a
4 ¾ length victory in the Juvenile. The following year, War Pass
continued his winning ways with a seven length victory in an
allowance test, but like many Champion juveniles, couldn't carry his
form forward into his thee year old season. After tasting defeat in
the Tampa Bay Derby after a rough trip. War Pass took one more stab
at the triple crown preps in the Wood Memorial, winging it on the
front end in his usual style, only to falter in the stretch. He
placed second by a ½ length to Tale of Ekati, a colt he dominated as
a two year old. War Pass suffered a foreleg injury during the Wood
Memorial and was retired.
It's
difficult to say how far War Pass' progeny will want to run. His sire
Cherokee Run was the Champion Sprinter of 1994. Cherokee Run's
offspring won stakes races up to 1 1/8 miles and two placed at 1 ¼
miles. His two most prominent sons at stud are Kafwain and
Yonaguska. Kafwain sired two stakes winners at 1 1/8 miles, Daisy
Devine and The Pamplemousse and one son Don't Forget Gil, placed at 1
¼ miles. The same for Yonaguska. His offspring win up to 1 1/8
miles. His best son, Musket Man finished third in the Kentucky Derby
and Preakness.
War
Pass' damsire Mr. Prospector is a Brilliant/Classic Chef-de-race and
his second damsire Hoist The Flag is a Brilliant/Intermediate
Chef-de-race. It's not a stretch to opine that War Pass' babies may
follow in his hoof-prints and those of his sire Cherokee Run and will
likely be distance challenged beyond 1 1/8 miles.
War
Pass sired 65 foals in his initial crop and he was #13 on the
Freshman Sire list of 2012 in terms of earnings. War Pass stood only
two years at stud, including a stint in Australia, before his
mysterious death right before the 2011 breeding season. War Pass is
also the sire of Louisiana Derby hero Revolutionary.

Female
family:
Java's
War's dam Java (Rainbow Quest – Island Jamboree, by Explodent) was
bred in England and made two starts there before shipping to
Hollywood Park. She won her maiden at Hollywood traveling 1 1/6 miles
over the lawn. The mare made three starts in allowance company at
Santa Anita, and showed her fondness for Hollywood Park while winning
her final start at 1 ¼ miles on turf beating allowance runners. Java
retired with a 7-2-1-2 ($73,174) record.
To
date, four of Java's foals have raced in the U.S. and are winners.
Her 2009 son Coffee Bar (by Mineshaft) placed in the Toronto Cup
Stakes going 1 1/8 miles over the Polytrack. He's also a winner over
turf and placed in claiming races on dirt. Java's War is Java's
first foal to attain graded stakes status. Java bore a two year by
Perfect Soul, a yearling colt by Not Bourbon and she is in foal to
the same sire.
Java
is a full sister to the Champion turf mare Fiji who was victorious
from 1 1/8 to 1 ¼ miles. She's also a half sister to Capri (by
Generous) a French Group 2 winner. Java's War's second dam Island
Jamboree (Explodent – Careless Virgin, by Wing Out) earned over
$300K as a multiple stakes winner. Distant members of this distaff
line include Grade 1 winners Careless Jewel, Subordination, Fabulous
Notion and Cacoethes.
Java's
War is a member of the Lowe's Female Family 2-e. Members of this
line have won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes. The
most recent was Preakness hero Candy Spots in 1963.
Damsire:
Rainbow
Quest passed along his great stamina to his offspring and that of his
daughters. He was recognized for passing along these attributes when
he was named a Classic/Stout Chef-de-Race in 2006. As a broodmare
sire, Rainbow Quest is represented by over 60 stakes winners
internationally at 1 ¼ miles or beyond; however, only one of those
is a winner at that distance over dirt. The stallion has been
amongst the top 50 leading broodmare sires in the U.S. for over ten
years.
Java's
War has a fairly unusual pedigree. Both his sire and damsire are
descended directly from the Brilliant/Classic Chef-de-race Blushing
Groom. There have been five stakes winners produced by mating sires
and dams from the same Blushing Groom sire line and they've won over
dirt and turf.
Summary:
The
colt has a speed over stamina pedigree. He raced very wide in the
Blue Grass Stakes, and 1 ¼ miles could well be within his scope.
Java's War has a mix of dirt and turf influences in his pedigree.
Java's
War is a winner over the lawn and Polytrack. He may be adept over
dirt, although to date, he doesn't appear as strong over that surface
as he is over turf and Polytrack. Java's War placed second, beaten by
three lengths in the Tampa Bay Derby but the unbeaten Verrazano;
however, the worst finish of his career came in the Kentucky Jockey
Club Stakes (G-2) at Churchill as a two year old. Last year's Blue
Grass Stakes hero Dullahan also has a mix of turf/dirt attributes in
his pedigree and he finished third in the Kentucky Derby. It's very
possible that Java's War could emulate that feat in three weeks.
