Kentucky Derby Pedigree Profile - Itsmyluckyday
{{monthName}} {{day}}, {{year}} {{hour12}}:{{minuteTwoDigit}}{{dayPeriod}}
On
Saturday in the Holy Bull Stakes (G-3), Itsmyluckyday looked last
year's Juvenile Champ Shanghai Bobby in the eye and went right on by.
SHANGHAI
BOBBY,
making his first start since prevailing in the Breeders' Cup
Juvenile, had the bulls-eye on his back. Breaking from post one, the
Todd Pletcher trainee went right to the front with CLEARLY
NOW
and Itsmyluckyday hounding him through the early stages of the race.
Rounding the far turn, the three colts separated themselves from the
rest of the pack. Shanghai Bobby threw down six furlongs in 1:10.69
as Itsmyluckyday inched his way to the Champ's throat latch. Clearly
Now, fell behind as the two determined colts sprinted clear. Itsmyluckyday,
piloted expertly by Elvis Trujillo,
drew away from the tiring Shanghai Bobby in deep
stretch, crossing the finish line two lengths in front. Take nothing
away from the Juvenile Champ, as he was making his first start of the
season and was 11 ¼ lengths clear of the third place finisher
Clearly Now. Itsmyluckyday traveled the 1 1/6 miles in 1:41.81,
breaking the old record of 1:42.35 set by Endorsement set February 1,
2012.

ITSMYLUCKYDAY
(Lawyer Ron - Viva La Slew, by Doneraile Court) sold for $110K at the
OBS March 2012 two year old in training sales to Trilogy Stable and
Laurie Pleasa after breezing a furlong in :10 3/5 seconds. He
demonstrated his fondness for the Gulfstream Park surface on January
1, winning the one mile Gulfstream Park Derby by 6 ¾ lengths. As a
two year old, Itsmyluckyday demonstrated his versatility and class in
winning the Fasig Tipton Turf Dash Stakes and in his following start,
the Foolish Pleasure Stakes at a mile over dirt. His form took a
downward turn when the Eddie Pleasa Jr. trainee finished off of the
board in the Delta Jackpot (G-3) and Dania Beach Stakes. The dark bay
colt owns a 9-5-1-1 ($425,6000) race record and collected 10 Kentucky
Derby points for his victory in the Holy Bull.
Sire:
Lawyer
Ron, Itsmyluckyday's sire, made 26 starts in four years. He thrived
on racing. Lawyer Ron faced the starter ten times as a two year old,
which in recent times, is more than some horses run in their entire
careers. Lawyer Ron wasn’t a precocious juvenile. He ended his two
year old season with a 10-3-1-3 record, earning wins in a maiden,
allowance and listed stakes event. At three, Lawyer Ron started to
develop his talent. After sweeping the Southwest Stakes, Risen Star
(G3), Rebel (G3), and Arkansas Derby (G-1), Lawyer Ron headed to
Churchill Downs as the favorite for the 2006 Kentucky Derby. After
contesting the pace, he faded to twelfth. Lawyer Ron was at the top
of his game as a four year old and set two track records at 1 1/8
miles; One at Saratoga in the Whitney Handicap (G-1) and the other at
Belmont Park in the Woodward Stakes (G-1). Despite finishing seventh
in the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic, Lawyer Ron was voted Champion
Older Horse. He was extremely competitive at the highest levels
running 1 1/8 miles, but his Achilles heel was the classic distance
of 1 ¼ miles. Lawyer Ron's worst finishes came in the largest events
of his life in the Kentucky Derby and two off the board placings in
the Breeders’ Cup Classic. However, Lawyer Ron did finish second by
a nose to Curlin in the 1 ¼ mile Jockey Club Gold Cup. Overall, his
record at 1 ¼ miles was 4-0-1-0.
Tragically,
Lawyer Ron only stood one and a half seasons at stud before
succumbing to colic at the young age of six. When his two year olds
hit the track running in 2011, the son of Langfuhr fished the year as
the third leading Freshman sire in terms of earnings. Last year, he
was the sixth leading Sophomore sire despite producing only 80 foals.
On the track, Lawyer Ron's progeny have been successful up to 1 1/8
miles over Polytrack and Turf and up to 1 1/6 miles over the dirt.

Female
Family:
Itsmyluckyday's
dam Viva La Slew is a veteran of 20 races. She spent her career as an
allowance runner at Calder and Gulfstream Park, making the majority
of her starts as a two year old. She placed against the colts in the
listed B L's Sweep Stakes. The daughter of Doneraile Court won at
two furlongs to a mile over the dirt. Itsmyluckyday's half sister
Findthesource (by Dehere) raced twice, getting a second and third
place finish against maidens. Viva La Slew has a two year old colt,
Viva Wildwood (by Henny Hughes), and Tale of Ekati yearling colt.
Viva
La Slew is a half sister to the stakes winning mare Ready to Live (by
More Than Ready) and to the Mexican stakes winner Medaglia D'orizaba
(by Medaglia D' Oro). Itsmyluckyday's second dam Vida La Viva (by
Crafty Prospector) is unraced. Descendants of this female family
include Florida Derby hero Vicar (by Wild Again) and French Group 1
winner Astronomer Royal (by Danzig).

Damsire:
Itsmyluckyday's
damsire Doneraile Court, a son of Triple Crown hero Seattle Slew,
carved out a career as a miler. As a broodmare sire, he’s
represented by eight stakes winners, including the Champion Chilean
Filly Amani. Bashford Manor Stakes (G-3) hero Circle Unbroken, and
listed winner Bernie the Maestro. Doneraile Court’s daughters
produce mainly sprinter/milers that are vulnerable past 1 1/6 miles.
The aforementioned Amani is the only stakes winner at 1 1/8 and
1
¼ miles over the dirt.

Going
back one generation, Itsmyluckyday's second damsire Crafty Prospector
(Mr. Prospector - Real Crafty Lady, by In Reality) won six of eight
starts as a sprinter and was second in the Gulfstream Park Handicap
(G-1) at 1 ¼ miles. He was a useful sire and some of his notable
runners include Japanese Champion Agnes Digital, Crafty Friend,
Prospector's Gamble and Sneaky Friend. Crafty Prospector is a strong
mud influence in pedigrees. His daughter's offspring were best as
sprinter/milers.
Itsmyluckyday
is the only foal produced by the Layer Ron/Doneraile Court bloodline
cross.
Summary:
Itsmyluckyday
is a well-conformed, eye-catching, large dark brown colt with the physic of a two
turn route runner. Both his sire and damsire have an extremely powerful shoulder and Itsmyluckyday inherited this feature. He has a smooth gallop and excellent leg extension
without any wasted movement or leg paddling. Itsmyluckyday bore out
in deep stretch of the Holy Bull, responding to the left handed whip,
but held a straight course during the rest of the race.
Itsmyluckyday's pedigree is borderline for Classic distances. Neither
his sire or damsire were winners beyond 1 1/8 miles and the second
damsire Crafty Prospector lends more speed than stamina to his
pedigree. Itsmyluckyday has a pace pressing running style. He could
be strongly competitive up to 1 1/8 miles, and may have the fortitude
to place beyond 1 1/8 miles especially if there is a slow early pace,
but he may need a lifetime best race to win a Classic.
