Opening Weekend at the Spa: The Ladies of Saratoga

Photo: Gary Quill

Three glorious but uncharacteristically hot and humid days kicked off the 2016 meeting at Saratoga. The lid lifter featured a dazzling performance in the G3 Schuylerville by the Todd Pletcher trained Sweet Loretta. Saturday’s card saw Bitumen win the G3 Sanford in last to first fashion in the stretch while Dacita won the G1 Diana by a nose over Recepta in a four-way photo finish. Undefeated two-year-old filly champion Songbird topped off the weekend as she turned back the challenge of Carina Mia at the head of the stretch to win going away in the G1 Coaching Club American Oaks.

The ladies dominated the action on the track and in the stands as the charm of Saratoga seems to bring out the best in summer fashion with the millennial fillies. The colors were brilliant as was this bloggers idea to share a sample of the sights at the Spa on opening weekend in a most creative way. Many thanks to all the ladies who made this piece possible. Horse racings’ future is as bright as their outfits and smiles.

The Ladies of Saratoga have set the bar pretty high Del Mar gals. The Beach Boys got it wrong. In my humble opinion, “I wish they all could be Saratoga girls.”
