Charles Lopresti trainee Turallure stormed down the grandstand side of the E.P. Taylor Turf Course to win the 15th edition of the $1 million Woodbine Mile, which was sponsored by Ricoh.
On the inside and in ninth early, jockey Julien Leparoux timed the flashy four-year-old gray’s move to perfection, angling out in mid-stretch and reeling in rivals one by one.
Even though Turallure only finished a neck in front of odds-on favorite Courageous Cat, from inside the eighth pole it was clear he was travelling best and would be hard to stave off. Right One was another nose back in third.
The victory is the second consecutive victory for the son of Canadian Triple Crown winner Wando, who competed in the Atto Mile in 2003.
Before the Woodbine Mile, the Four D Stables homebred won the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch by 2 ½ lengths over Get Stormy, himself a Grade 1 winner.
Turallure is now 6-for-15 lifetime with close to $900,000 in earnings.
With the victory, the Kentucky-bred is guaranteed a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs, where he has a first, a second and two thirds in his past four starts over the Louisville track’s turf course.
Turallure returned $14.90 to win.
Two races earlier on the card, Irish-bred four-year-old Wigmore Hall rallied up the inside to collar Simmard in the $500,000 Northern Dancer Turf at 1 ½ miles.
Wigmore Hall entered the Northern Dancer on the strength of a troubled fourth-place finish to Cape Blanco in the Grade 1 Arlington Million.
Finishing third was Al Khali, who was fourth in last year’s Pattison Canadian International.
Off as the 7-5 favorite, Wigmore Hall was guided by Jamie Spencer. He is trained by Michael Bell.
