The Ohio Derby - A Photo Blog
The Ohio Derby did not disappoint. As four horses made starts in the race that had previously started in the Kentucky Derby (Girvin, Irap, Fast and Accurate, and Untrapped). Fast and Accurate was making his second start since the Derby, and first start back on dirt. The experience that came with this day of racing was a great one.
Morning workouts were just as fun to watch as if you were at any big name track.
Before this work, this horse had been the most stubborn when it came to actually picking up his feet and going.
Comecatchme (#5) and Megan Fadlovich jump out of the gate in race number two, where they finished forth. Candy Love (green silks to the right) won the 1 mile claiming event.
This gelded son of Awesome Again caught my eye in the paddock. Againsome was once a $400,000 yearling purchase at Keeneland. He is a half brother to Whitecliffsofdover, a stakes winner in Europe.
One of the gate workers studies the program ahead of the upcoming race to see which horse he will handle and their chances to win.
Breaking from the gate in race 3. The #8, Againsome, would finish second to long shot winner How You.
Jockey Irwin Rosendo and How You are all smiles returning to the winners circle after winning race three at odds of nearly 13-1. The Lookin at Lucky was a $125,000 two-year-old purchased back in 2014.
And it is a filly in the George Lewis Memorial Stakes. The filly, Leona's Reward, is on the inside of a very tight photo with Eightthehardway (#7).
Can't Get Enough gets to the early lead in race six, a nine furlong claiming event.
The 1A, Paltarrevenge, overtakes Can't Get Enough in late stretch to win. The Milwaukee Brew gelding has won 11 in 47 starts.
Rider Jose Bracho is thankful for another successful ride.
This little girl, accompanied by her father, was simply in love with the horses and the atmosphere of the racetrack.
In race four, the favorite Justalittlesmoke, took over at the top of the stretch to win the J. William Petro Memorial Handicap for fillies and mares. Her winning margin was 7 3/4 lengths. The daughter of Smoke Glacken has won her last three starts and is a multiple stakes winner and has never been out of the money in 23 lifetime starts.
The feature race, The Ohio Derby, was on deck, and Irap caught many an eye with his wild nature and massive physique.
By the crowd for the first time, Fast and Accurate gets the lead over Vibe, Irap, and Girvin.
By the second time, only Irap and Girvin are there, fighting out the finish. The official winner was Irap (#2) by a nose over Girvin and Mike Smith.
The blanket of red carnations were draped over the shoulder of Irap to signify the colt's victory.
