Checking in with Belmont Stakes 2018 contender Hofburg
While the rains were hitting Pimlico from all sides this week in preparation for the Preakness Stakes, on Friday morning I decided to check in with Hofburg at Bill Mott’s barn at the Oklahoma Training Track in Saratoga. In the Kentucky Derby, Hofburg ran late for seven, made a strong gallop out and is now under consideration for the 2018 Belmont Stakes.
What impressed me as I watched him being led from his stall through every step of his morning workout routine was his calm demeanor, professionalism and focus. He clearly is doing very well, and improving steadily, said Riley Mott, Bill's son and assistant. The other aspect was feeling the connection of everyone around the barn with this horse. I hope I was able to capture some of that magic.
So enjoy the photos of this magnificent chestnut Tapit colt and its Mott family team, whether you are drowning in the rain and mud at Pimlico, or simply looking forward to the next big thing on the racetrack.
Out of his stall and into the warm morning sun.

Onto the track for a relaxed warmup.
Here comes Hofburg, breezing on the outside of Royal Ascot-bound Yoshida, under the watchful eye of Bill Mott.
There goes Hofburg, striding out into the barn-side turn of the Oklahoma training track.
After the track session, the return to the barn is a family affair, with both Bill Mott and his son, Riley, guiding Hofburg.

The groom is leading Hofburg from the barn to being hotwalked, where Hofburg takes a sip once in a while and is alert and relaxed.
And finally, it is the deserved bath time at the Spa:
