Saratoga Time Machine – Dehere Sweeps the 1993 Stakes

On his way to becoming the 1993 Two-Year-Old Champion, Dehere won all three graded stakes races for juvenile males for the first time since 1916. The Due Process Stable runner pulled off the rare sweep of the Sanford, Saratoga Special, and the Hopeful.

 

This son of Deputy Minister was named for Seton Hall University and NBA basketball star Terry Dehere. Robert Brennan, a Seton Hall benefactor, was the primary owner of Due Process, a New Jersey based racing operation.

 

Dehere would continue his great run with a victory in the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park. He was sent off the favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, but lost the race to Brocco. In his career Dehere raced nine times with six wins, two seconds, and earnings of $723,712.

 

 

 

 

Brennan also headed International Thoroughbred Breeders, which owned Deputy Minister and rebuilt Garden State Park as a state of the art racecourse with its glass grandstand.  The new track opened in 1985. Brennan’s business empire was short lived because by the 1990’s he would end up under investigation by the SEC for stock market manipulation and eventually Brennan would go to prison. Publicly held ITB would end up in bankruptcy and Garden State Park would close in 2001 to be torn down to make room for a “town center” in Cherry Hill, NJ.

 

In 1993 Mike Smith would end up winning the Saratoga jockey title, but it was Julie Krone that captured headlines by becoming only the third jockey to win five races on a Saratoga card. At the time she joined Angel Cordero, who did it in 1968, and Ron Turcotte, who won five in 1973. Krone broke her ankle in a spill on the final day of the 1993 Saratoga meeting.

 

Lure won the 1993 Daryl’s Joy, which was later renamed in 1996 to honor the Saratoga favorite Fourstardave. Fourstardave, the “Sultan of Saratoga” won the Daryl’s Joy in 1990 and 1991. Fourstardave won at least one race at the Spa every year from 1987 to 1994.

 

Lure was a Claiborne Farm homebred, who raced in their famous gold colors, won the Breeders’ Cup Mile in 1992 and went on to repeat in that same race in 1993. In his career Lure won 14 races and $2,515,289 in purse money.

 

Sea Hero won the Travers in 1993 after having been victorious in the Kentucky Derby. The Derby win was the first for Sea Hero’s connections of jockey Jerry Bailey, trainer Mack Miller, and owner Paul Mellon and his Rokeby Stable. Sea Hero did not win the Eclipse award for three-year-old males, that award went to Prairie Bayou. Sea Hero did get a statue eventually. There is, of course, a really big statue of Sea Hero in the middle of the paddock at Saratoga.

 

 

Sky Beauty won the Alabama in 1993 for the Hall of Fame duo of trainer Allen Jerkens and rider Mike Smith. Sky Beauty won a stakes race at the Spa three years in a row. As a juvenile she won the Adirondack in 1992, then the Alabama, and as a four-year-old she took the Go for Wand. In 1993, Sky Beauty won the NYRA Triple Tiara with wins in the Acorn, Mother Goose, and Coaching Club American Oaks. She did not earn an Eclipse Award in her sophomore season as that championship went to Hollywood Wildcat. Sky Beauty did get the Eclipse for Older Females the following year. After a career with 15 wins and $1,336,000 in earnings, she was inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2011.
