Kentucky Derby 2018 Scouting Report: New York Division

With the running of the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes, New York's road to Kentucky Derby 2018 is well under way. Every month from now until the First Saturday in May, there will be a qualifying-points race at Aqueduct, and right after each of those races we'll update our report on the New York contenders for the Derby.

This is the time of the year the juveniles are gaining valuable experience before they turn 3 on Jan. 1.

“Like always, it’s an exciting time of year when you have 2-year-olds getting ready to turn three and a lot of important races coming up," said Todd Pletcher, a mainstay on the New York circuit who won last year's Derby with Always Dreaming. "We’ll see. The next 90 days are really critical in how the 2-turning-3-year-olds develop. We’re all getting ready to learn a lot more about what kind of potential they have and what might be in store for them. It’s always a fun time of the year.”

Looking back to last year, the first New York Contenders Top 10 was loaded with 2-year-olds that ended up having good sophomore seasons. Although Always Dreaming was not on that list, there were big names such as Classic Empire, Practical Joke, Mo Town, Gunnevera, Takaful, and Good Samaritan. Six of the t10 turned out to be noteworthy 3-year-olds.

Last year horses from New York won all three jewels of the Triple Crown with Always Dreaming, Cloud Computing and Tapwrit. Is there a classic winner on this year’s initial Top 10 list?

(The Juvenile Edition)

To qualify for this list a horse needs to be from the barn of a New York-based trainer (many of whom spend the winter in Florida) or have run in an important stakes race in New York, on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. Thus, there will be some regional cross-over with horses like Free Drop Billy or Sporting Chance, who spent the summer and debuted at Saratoga.
