Flat Out rallied from as far back as sixth place early to win the 2012 Jockey Club Gold Cup in thrilling fashion over Stay Thirsty. His last victory was in the 2011 Jockey Club Gold Cup.

Flat Out joined an elite group of horses to win consecutive Gold Cups: Curlin, Crème Fraiche, Slew O’ Gold, Shuvee, Kelso, and Nashua.

Jockey Joel Rosario guided Flat Out to the outside as they entered the clubhouse turn and got up by a head to beat the very determined Stay Thirsty.  Flat Out was sent off as the third betting choice, paying $9.30 to win.  The win gave Bill Mott his second grade one victory on Super Saturday.  Earlier in the day he took the Beldame when Royal Delta romped to a nine and a half length victory.

This race was the third start for Flat Out under the care of Mott.  He had run a good race to finish third in the Whitney and followed that with a bullet work on the Oklahoma training track in Saratoga.  Mott agreed, “He ran a huge race last time. He is a relatively fresh horse. He had a little break in the late spring and he was up for it today.”

After a quarter mile Flat Out was eight lengths behind the pacesetter, Stay Thirsty. Mott described the race, “He was picking up horses and he was doing it under a hold and that’s always a good thing and he hadn’t asked him to run. That other horse (Stay Thirsty) fought on pretty well.  Todd (Pletcher) he had him ready today, but we just had ours a little more ready today and it wasn’t by much. That horse that finished second ran his butt off.”

When asked if Flat Out would head to the Breeders’ Cup, Mott joked, “That’s been the plan.”

Mott has a chance to win his second Breeders' Cup Classic in a row.  Last year Drosselmeyer won the Classic without a winning prep race. Flat Out’s win in the Gold Cup reminded him of 1995. “Cigar was able to win this race and go onto to win the Breeders’ Cup”.
