Watch: Shadwell Turf Mile hero Wise Dan 'happy as can be'
Two-time Horse of the Year winner Wise Dan is also a multiple winner of Keeneland’s Grade 1 Shadwell Turf Mile. With that Grade 1, $1 million feature the headliner to Saturday’s “Fall Stars” card, TVG caught up with the chestnut, now 11 years old and living on trainer Charlie LoPresti’s Kentucky farm.
Wise Dan mostly grazed when on camera with his curious half-brother, Successful Dan, who’s also out of the mare Lisa Danielle.
“He’s doing really good,” LoPresti told reporter Scott Hazelton. “He’s got this 20-acre field to run with his brother, and he’s just as happy as can be.”
“That was just an incredible time to think a horse could come back from that and be the same horse that he was — and he showed everybody that he was,” LoPresti told TVG.
One race later, Wise Dan closed his career with his second Shadwell Turf Mile score.
“I never thought that I’d have a horse like this,” LoPresti said. “You work all your life. Trainers have hundreds of horses and never get a horse like that. It was just incredible. It’s hard to describe.”
Check out both TVG videos for more on what Wise Dan meant to his connections, including owner Morton Fink, who experienced his share of health issues but always looked forward to seeing his horse, plus the bond shared by brothers Wise Dan and Successful Dan.
