Watch: No longer in 'Jeopardy'? Racing rebounds on game shows

Horse racing fans went into a frenzy in December when contestants met a simple (for us) Jeopardy! clue — “Bob Baffert trained 2 recent Triple Crown-winning horses: American Pharoah in 2015 & this horse in 2018” — with blank stares.

Since then, however, racing is 2-for-2 on popular game shows. Breathing a sigh of relief?

As with the first go-around, it’s unlikely this means much in the bigger picture. We all know racing’s popularity isn’t what it once was; that there is so much information to consume these days, even the biggest bits of news from certain industries can go ignored; and that it’s a small sample size and group of individuals given a national TV stage.

So, your recent examples of racing on game shows…

First, on Feb. 11, Jeopardy! was at it again with a clue this time quickly solved:

Then on Tuesday, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire valued a question about the 2018 Triple Crown at $20,000. Golden Gate Fields track announcer Matt Dinerman has the call:

By the way, Millionaire host Chris Harrison, also of The Bachelor, worked at TVG back back in the day. And, yes, the question includes a flub. Seattle Slew lost, but not until after he swept the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

As a current TVG host, Mike Joyce, quipped upon watching, “This is like, what, the 2nd time this month horse racing has been saved?”
