It could be a few more weeks before Canterbury Park thaws out from a harsh winter. The Minnesota track, however, isn’t simply going dormant.

Last Saturday, Canterbury hosted a day of “extreme horse skijoring,” which it defines as “an adrenaline-packed race that involves a skier being pulled behind a horse.”

Skiers are known to reach 40 miles per hour as they maneuver through a course, which is anything but the standard racing oval. Along the way, competitors are required to grab rings.

A $1,500 prize was up for grabs in the first such competition at Canterbury, which also welcomed freestyle snowboard skijoring.
