Watch: Couple's horse racing-themed gender reveal
There's no way anyone involved with the April 1991 matchup could have anticipated gelding Valiant Pete versus quarter horse Griswold would have a room in suspense more than 25 years later and thousands of miles away.
Expecting a child in January, Bolton, England, residents Kelby King Makin and Danielle Joule recently gathered friends and family to watch Santa Anita's first match race. It was a gender reveal with a racing twist.

John Sadler trained Valiant Pete, who, as then-Los Angeles Times writer Bob Mieszerski put it, "did what most horsemen and handicappers felt he couldn't do -- beat the quarter horse Griswold." It took a world record time of 44 1/5 and came with a $100,000 prize (adjusted for inflation, worth more than $185,000 today).
