In last Saturday’s Preakness Stakes, Good Magic jockey Jose Ortiz sought to create a match race and wear down the favorite, Justify, on the front end.
As racing resumed Thursday on Old Hilltop, Pimlico Race Course played host to an actual match race. Our sympathies extend to Dave Rodman, who calls the action in Baltimore.
Shades of Seabiscuit vs. War Admiral in the 1938 Pimlico Special? Not quire.
All Rodman had to work with was 1-9 favorite Prime Time Man and 2-1 second choice Feel Proud in a 1 1/16-mile opener taken off the turf. Ten total entered, two of them coupled, before scratches.
We’ll let Rodman take it from here, with the added humor of TVG hosts Matt Carothers and Mike Joyce. By the way, the winner paid a cool $2.20.
