While Saratoga's has ended, a story that further solidifies Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith’s gentle personality gave reason to look back.

New York's ABC 10 News this week published a story titled, simply, “Mary’s Girl.” It is the intersection of Smith, an equine artist and Mary Chamberlain, a track employee who suffers from cerebral palsy.

“She always wanted a horse,” Mary’s dad told ABC 10 News.

The artist, Mike Geragthy, happens to own part of Clear Stars Stable. Mary got her hose, a daughter of Shanghai Bobby that has run third in both her maiden special weight starts at Saratoga.

Geragthy knows Mike Smith, too. He made the introduction. Mary, who does some painting herself, presented Smith with what’s now a treasured painting of his own.
