The US Jockeys Guild reports that Jose Luis Flores, removed from life support Thursday following an early week fall at Parx Racing, was the 157th jockey to die due to race-related injuries since 1940, and the first since Mario Chavez last October at Will Rogers Downs.

While the races went on Friday, a number of jockey colonies honored the 56-year-old winner of 4,650 races. Fans of the sport have also raised more than $9,000 through a GoFundMe to aid in the transition for his family, which includes his wife Joanne, a former jockey, and three children.
