HorseCenter: Preakness 2023 top contenders and long shots

Photo:

This week on HorseCenter, your hosts Brian Zipse and Matt Shifman look back at the 2023 Kentucky Derby won by Mage, discuss the follies of Forte and analyze the expected field for the Preakness.

At odds of 15-1, Mage won the Run for the Roses benefitting from a fast pace and a perfect ride by hall of famer Javier Castellano, who got his first Derby victory in his 16th try. Mage and Castellano were able to save ground after a slow start, rally on the outside and overtake Two Phil’s, who hung on gamely for second after being part of the early pace.

Matt and Brian preview the probable field of nine for Preakness 2023, which includes three horses from the Kentucky Derby, and they take a look at the morning-line odds for the big race at Pimlico on May 20. The guys discuss a couple of long shots who won their most recent start and have a chance to upset Mage.

HorseCenter will be back next week with the final Preakness edition. As always, thanks for watching the show.
