HorseCenter: Kentucky Derby, Oaks prep races begin

This week on HorseCenter your hosts Brian Zipse and Matt Shifman begin the long road to the 2024 Kentucky Derby and Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks with analysis and top picks for the Iroquois Stakes (G3) and the Pocahontas Stakes (G3) at Churchill Downs.

The Iroquois drew a field of nine 2-year-olds who will race a one-turn mile at Churchill on Saturday. All nine have won only one race thus far. Risk It was an impressive debut winner at Saratoga for Steve Asmussen, who will try to win this race for the fourth time.

The Pocahontas also attracted a field of nine. This field of juvenile fillies will also race a mile with their eyes on a spot in the Breeders’ Cup and some of the Kentucky Oaks points that are available to the top five finishers. Youalmosthadme for Brad Cox and Kenny McPeek’s V V's Dream will vie for favoritism in the Pocahontas.

Enjoy opening weekend at Churchill Downs and the showcase races for the 2-year-olds. As always, thanks for watching the show.
