HorseCenter: Breeders' Cup 2023 recap show

This week on HorseCenter, Brian Zipse and Matt Shifman finalize their 2023 Breeders' Cup coverage with a recap of all 14 races from Santa Anita.

It was a year where the main surprise at Thoroughbred racing’s world championships was that there were very few surprises. Nine of the 14 Breeders’ Cup races were won by favorites, which for the most part came from the biggest names in racing.

Trainer Bill Mott won three times with Cody’s Wish, Just F Y I and Elite Power and in doing so became a serious contender for the Eclipse Award for top trainer. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. continued his dominance of the Breeders’ Cup with victories on White Abarrio in the Classic, Goodnight Olive and Elite Power, which increased his career total to 20.

European horses won five of the races on the turf, lea by trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Ryan Moore who teamed up to win twice with Unquestionable in the Juvenile Turf and Auguste Rodin in the Turf.

Hopefully HorseCenter fans had a successful Breeders’ Cup even though long shots were hard to come by. As always, thanks for watching the show.
