HorseCenter: 2024 Kentucky Derby contenders first look

This week on HorseCenter, Brian Zipse and Matt Shifman take their first look at the 2024 Kentucky Derby by offering their consensus top 12 contenders for the American classic.

Fierceness is the No. 1 Derby contender for both Matt and Brian based on his dazzling maiden win at Saratoga and his speedy victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. The Repole Stable homebred and Todd Pletcher trainee certainly will be named the 2-year-old champion and will head into 2024 as the early favorite for the run for the roses.

The rest of the list contains graded-stakes winners and impressive maiden winners for trainers such as Pletcher, Brad Cox, Steve Asmussen, Bill Mott and Bob Baffert.

No doubt that several of these contenders will make appearances on the Derby trail to finish out this year and then moving ahead in 2024 at Aqueduct, Fair Grounds, Gulfstream Park and Oaklawn.

As always, Brian and Matt want to thank you for watching the show.
