HorseCenter: 2023 Kentucky Derby dark horses

This week on HorseCenter your hosts Brian Zipse and Matt Shifman continue their 2023 Kentucky Derby coverage by spotlighting 20 contenders still flying just under the radar for the first Saturday in May.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool 5 closed last weekend, revealing horses who were ignored in the betting and closed at odds of 24-1 or higher. Many of those horses are on the Derby dark horse list that Matt and Brian complied with 50 days left until the first Saturday in May.

The list includes six horses who are winners of a points race on the Derby trail and a total of 10 3-year-olds who are ranked in the top 20 on the official points list.
Brad Cox trains four of the dark horses, and Todd Pletcher and Steve Asmussen have two each in their barns.

With last year’s long-shot Kentucky Derby victory by
Rich Strike in mind, this list might contain another upset winner of the Run for the Roses or horses who could produce large payouts in the Derby exacta, trifecta and superfecta. Use this week’s edition of HorseCenter to start thinking about your Derby strategy. And as always, thanks for watching the show.
