Citation - winner of the Triple Crown in 1948 - became horse racing's first millionaire after claiming the $100,000 purse for the Hollywood Gold Cup. Citation was six years old at the time and not as sound as he once was, but his retirement was postponed so that he could fulfill the dying wish of his owner, baking soda magnate Warren Wright/Calumet Farm, and top $1 million dollars in career earnings. ~1951
