Twas Memorial Day Weekend

In lieu of the traditional prose type blog, I instead bring you a horse player's 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' parody.
Twas Memorial Day Weekend
Or, One horse player's 'Twas the Night Before Christmas' parody
T’was Memorial Day weekend and all across the nation
Were enthusiastic horse players, eager and salivating.
Were enthusiastic horse players, eager and salivating.
Past performances littered dining room tables
And notifications poured in from virtual stables.
Eyelids were heavy, hair rumpled, and yawns abounded
For no one could sleep ‘til the live long shot had been found.
Discarded coffee mugs and Five Hour Energy bottles gathered
Around pens, highlighters, and papers everywhere scattered.
Up in Virginia, the Dark Horse and Dark Wife
Settled on another Kentucky Derby compromise.
He picked the winner and she the runner-up
In hopes of another cold, hard exacta struck.
Traveling from the East Coast to the Midwest,
Was a conversation understood by two at best.
A long string of texts that consisted of just one word
Made me wonder what charges “Dude” had incurred.
One state over, HRN’s editor was one busy beaver,
Ironing out a Pick 4 that had him all in a fever!
Now, he may not be the Cat in the Hat,
But ZATT sure does know a lot about that.
Rockin’ Ry’s Triple Crown Handicapping Marathon was in full swing
As the season approached summer from an interesting spring.
Though the end of this marathon was nearly upon us,
The annual Breeders’ Cup Challenge held plenty of promise.
Up in New York, a trio of Grade Ones took center stage,
With big purse money and bragging rights both at stake.
Though none of the three drew a big field,
An upset winner one was sure to yield.
In the Ogden Phipps were six talented fillies and mares,
With courage and heart and talent to spare.
But of the six, Centring had the most to prove,
To show she was worthy of such a big move.
Next up in the Acorn, Kauai Katie faces her first test
Though despite the distance, it looks to be no contest.
A couple of Oaks contenders look to challenge her mettle,
But Kauai Katie wants this and for less will not settle.
A feat he should easily accomplish in grand style.
For at Belmont the Old Timer stands undefeated.
Out of a fifth win there, he will not be cheated.
With so much talent gathered all in one place,
For many, it wouldn’t be hard to make a case.
Though one may stand above the rest in every way,
You never know just how a race will play.
As the bugler sounded the call to the post,
Glasses everywhere were raised in a pre-race toast.
Last minute wagers were placed in a hurry,
And unsure bettors fretted and worried.
As post time drew nigh, I heard Lukas exclaim,
“Happy ‘capping to all, and good luck on your claims!
And though to my glee, Oxbow spoiled the Triple Crown,
Have no fear! I have no shot at taking a stakes race down.”
