Golden Lad continues Broadway Gold's success as broodmare

If I have said a once, I have probably said it at least a
thousand times, breeding is a tricky business. Regardless of the fact that not
every mare can be a blue hen, whenever “famous siblings,” as I like to refer to
them, show up, people take notice. Such has been the case with Golden Lad, a
3-year old brother to graded stakes winner and 2012 Kentucky Oaks runner-up Broadway’s Alibi (pictured above).
As has become normal for the issue of Broadway Gold, it took Golden Lad more than one start to break his
maiden. In his first start, the dark bay son of Medaglia d’Oro was no factor.
He broke near the back of the field and made a bold run to improve his position
late, but it was clear that the 6 furlongs of his debut race were not enough.
Next out, trainer Todd Pletcher sent his charge to post in 1 1/16 mile maiden
special weight, and that was just what the racing gods had ordered. Golden Lad
was the smashing 6 ¾ length winner that day against a field that included the
highly touted Mr. Besilu.
Since his initial win, Golden Lad posted two straight runner-up efforts against stakes placed Midnight
Taboo and Holy Invader, who has not competed in a stakes race but has faced
stakes winners. Those two runner-up efforts were followed by two wins in quick
succession, including today’s win in Race 8 at Gulfstream Park.
At the break, Golden
Lad with Jose Lezcano in the irons settled into fifth in perfect stalking
position behind the early leaders. As the field turned for home, Golden Lad
looked hopelessly beaten despite having moved into second as Valid, the pacesetter, kicked on for
home and continued to look strong. Alas, Valid would not come away the winner
today, though, as Golden Lad grittily dug in and slowly but surely cut into
Valid’s lead. As the wire flashed overhead, it was Golden Lad who had his head in
front, the winner by a neck.
Golden Lad has yet to compete at the stakes level, but if
the success of his two sisters is any indication, Golden Lad should have no
problem stepping up in class. Aside from graded stakes winning Broadway’s
Alibi, Broadway Gold also counts among her four starters the stakes winner R Gypsy Gold. By Bernardini, R Gypsy
Gold won a pair of listed stakes at Belmont Park, and included in her successes
were two graded stakes placings, a third in the G1 Mother Goose and a third in
the G2 Molly Pitcher.
Broadway Gold was a $600,000 yearling purchase for Mrs. E.
Paul Robsham. In 11 career starts, she earned $166,645 and a stakes race
accounted for one of her 3 career wins. However, it was not on the track that
Broadway Gold brought E. Paul Robsham Stables its most success. No, she has
been more successful as a broodmare than as a runner. Of her 4 starters, three
have been winners. Her two daughters have thus far been the most successful,
with Broadway’s Alibi a graded stakes winner and R Gypsy Gold a stakes winner.
All of Broadway Gold’s progeny thus far have been homebreds
for E. Paul Robsham Stables and have raced carrying the gold and maroon silks
of the stable. However, the stock of E. Paul Robsham Stables was dispersed
during the November Keeneland sale where Broadway’s Alibi sold for $2,150,000.
Despite the dispersal however, Golden Lad is still racing for and carrying the
colors of E. Paul Robsham Stables.
