Calidoscopio, you’re just the second 10-year old to win a graded stakes race in North America. What would you say to anyone who doubted you?
My body’s old but it ain’t impaired/ I don’t need no rockin’ chair!
But Calidoscopio, most horses your age are enjoying the easy life. Kicking back, relaxing, courting a few mares…Aren’t you looking forward to those things?
Retirement don’t fit in my plan.
So no retirement. The goal for the year is obviously the Breeders’ Cup Marathon, but you’re not getting any younger. You’ve already had a minor injury this year. Is it wise for you to keep going?
I ain’t ready for the junkyard yet/ ‘Cause I still feel like a new Corvette.
After today’s performance, feeling like a new Corvette is certainly a fitting description. You accelerated from 0 to 40 in a matter of strides, and stopped the clock in 2.31:84, which is about on par with Eldaafer’s time in this race back in 2009 but not even close to the average win time at this distance.
It might take a little longer but I’ll get there.
You have certainly made it clear that your age has not diminished your ability on the track. Thank you for taking the time to give this playful interview.
There you have it folks, straight from the horse’s mouth. You might think Calidoscopio should be put out to pasture, but it’s clear that he has other ideas. At 10-years old, he’s much like the energizer bunny in that he just keeps going…and going…and going…If you thought his Breeders’ Cup Marathon victory back in November was a fluke, his last to first victory in today’s Brooklyn Handicap in the slop should prove otherwise. Look for him to keep racing and winning because I doubt there’s a horse in the country that can go with him at 12 furlongs, even whichever young whippersnapper happens to win tomorrow’s Belmont Stakes.
