Michael Lynch, Jr. (Fuzz) is the first-ever winner of DerbyWars LIVE!
Lynch, of Tinley Park, Ill., outplayed a field of 10 tough-as-nails handicappers in an on-site $20,000 contest held at DerbyWars headquarters in Louisville, Kentucky on Saturday.
Lynch padded his lead with another big score at Belmont, this time Recepta in the 8th race. In the Pennsylvania Derby, none of the players selected the winner, Frosted, or the runner-up, Iron Fist, so the contest would come down to a finale at Kentucky Downs. There was room for the second or third place contenders to overtake Lynch with a longshot in the Fasig Tipton Ladies Marathon stakes. However, no one picked the 25-1 bomber, Modernstone! Lynch's pick, Courtesan, finished 2nd and secured his big victory!
The final winning score for the first-ever DerbyWars LIVE event was $90.40 - and $10 Grand!
Finishing in second place was Vic Stauffer (Goofontheroof), with a final score of $68, to take home $5,000, and Brent Sumja (Bsumone) rallied for third to win $3,000 with a final score of $61.20. Dylan Donnelly (Rookie07) hung on for the 4th place spot with a $47 score, and won $2,000.
The players were treated to a VIP experience during the weekend, beginning with an exciting cocktail welcome reception on Friday night that drew Travers-winning trainer Dale Romans, who thrilled everyone with his stories about the horses he has trained, including Keen Ice. Churchill Downs track announcer, Travis Stone, and racing analyst, Joe Kristufek, also made an appearance to chat with the players.
DerbyWars LIVE Participants (L-R): Brent Sumja (Bsumone), Jeff Sutera (Scooze), Mike Lazarus (Mikelaz), Winner, Michael Lynch, Jr. (Fuzz), Mark Aylward (Concreteman), Dylan Donnelly (Rookie07), Barry Spears (BSL2064), Terry Hay (Walletlifter). |
The contest action was hot and energy was high on Saturday, and every moment was captured by cameras trained on the "war room" where the players set up their laptops for the game. You can watch the replay of the live webcast here, with player interviews and more!
After Lynch was awarded the giant DerbyWars LIVE check, he and the rest of the participants were whisked off to Churchill Downs for a night of celebration in the Winners' Circle suites. It was a weekend to remember for all - rivalries turned into friendships and memories were made to last a lifetime!
