DerbyWars $20K Saturday Game Recap - Bri On The 5

The weekend contest action on DerbyWars produced a new $20,000 Saturday Game winner, Sabrina Smith of South Carolina!

Smith (Bri on the leaderboards) outplayed 92 others to take home the first prize in this weekend's featured contest. The $20K game included 14 races from Belmont, Monmouth Park and Santa Anita.

Smith started off slowly, scoring in Monmouth's 9th and 10th races to get on the board, but her prospects changed with Santa Anita's 7th race, where she hit with the long shot, #5 Fueled By Bourbon.

"I actually came up with a somewhat mathematical strategy for Saturday’s contest and it worked," said Smith. "Picking a winner is one thing, but betting a winner is totally different story. I knew that the chalk probably wasn’t going to hit more than around 30% (of the time) so I allocated the other 70% accordingly. The third to last race won it for me. The #5 (horse).... the number 5 is special to me as is the family member (now passed) who always tells me when to use it... I had a very strong intuition Saturday morning picking my lineup, and when in doubt with my pick, I knew that the 5 was it."

The #5 choice scored $41.60 to put her into the lead. She finished up strong with back-to-back favorites in Beholder and Big Move. Her winning score was $103.70 with eight on-the-board picks.

Smith is no stranger to sports betting, and was introduced to racing via an online spots book in 2009.

"I found myself sidelined due to emergency heart surgery and all I could really do was TV and computer," she explained. "I have always been a competitive person, so I found an online sports book. I was mostly using it for 2 team ball sports. Out of curiosity, I clicked on "Horses", loved the idea of instant gratification, constant racing and $2.00 minimum bet, and the rest is history."

Horse racing contests became an outlet when South Carolina changed its online betting rules. "I began entering as many free contests as I could just for the fun of it. I was actually was ask to handicap for a season from one of those sites and loved it. I met and competed against some of the nicest, most talented people ever. I eventually found DerbyWars and have been playing small scale ever since, trying to win my way into the big stuff."

Online was the only way Smith experienced horse racing, until the 2014 Preakness! "I had the most fun I’ve ever had in my adult life. Hit one Pick 3, two Pick 4's and the Pick 6. I'm hooked."

Runner-up in the $20K game was Myles Richards (Mylesr) with a final score of $101.80. In third place was Anthony Trezza (Youare2020) with $87.00, who had lead the game for the early stages. Tony Calabrese (Funkymonkey) rounded out 4th with a final score of $86.70.

The top 4 finishers will earn an entry into the next $100K game on July 3-4!
