Kentucky Derby 2019 Radar: Baffert routes Kingly to new prep
Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert confirmed Tuesday with Fair Grounds' publicity department that Clearview Stables' Kingly will not ship to Louisiana for Saturday's Grade 2, $400,000 Risen Star Stakes.
Rather Baffert said the full brother of Mohaymen, a Tapit colt out of the mare Justwhistledixie, will reroute to another Kentucky Derby 2019 prep: the $100,000 El Camino Real Derby this weekend at Golden Gate Fields.
The Risen Star attracted an overflow field of 15 entrants led by War of Will, the last out winner of the Lecomte Stakes (G3) in Louisiana. Kingly had drawn the No. 13 post position and stood at 12-1 on the morning line.
Run at 1 1/8 miles on the all weather track, the El Camino Real Derby pays out points on a 10-4-2-1 basis to the Top 4 finishers. Additionally, this year's winner will receive a fees-paid berth to the Preakness Stakes for the first time.
Kingly has raced twice, winning his Dec. 1 debut at Del Mar before progressing to allowance optional claiming company on Jan. 31 at Santa Anita Park. Running over a sloppy, sealed surface, colt finished a clear second to Extra Hope, another who could hit the trail in the March 9 San Felipe (G2).
Other Southern California shippers for the El Camino Real Derby include the Doug O'Neill duo of Weekly Call and The Creep; Jerry Hollendorfer's More Ice; Jeff Bonde-trained King of Speed; and Keith Desormeaux's Knight's Cross. They'll have to take on Anothertwistafate, a Scat Daddy colt who has won his last two at Golden Gate Fields by open lengths.
Additionally, Baffert said, the Grade 1 winner Chasing Yesterday will scratch from Fair Grounds' Rachel Alexandra (G2), a Kentucky Oaks prep. No plans are set for her next start.
