Saturday's races were noteworthy within the 2-year-old division outside of California, too.
As the Bob Baffert-trained Coliseum debuted in style and Mucho Gusto battled to win the Bob Hope Stakes (G3), at least three other winners put forth the type of performances that could soon send them on the 2019 Kentucky Derby trail. But each comes with a reason to take pause as well.
Le General, a $125,000 purchase, was absolutely dominant in breaking his maiden in Aqueduct's fourth race, skipping to a 6 3/4-length victory. But the win came in state-bred competition, sire Lemon Drop Kid is known more for his route runners on turf, and trainer Michelle Nevin hasn't yet saddled a Derby starter. Still, if tracking prospects consider this one for your virtual stable.
Troy Ounce, a $150,000 purchase, emerged from a pack of horses after a three-wide bid in the Churchill Downs stretch to win by four lengths, also in maiden special weight competition. The colt runs for L and N Racing, which also campaigned 2017 Derby runner-up Lookin At Lee. Distance limitations are an unknown given he's a son of first-crop sire Goldencents.
There had to be some relief later Saturday at Churchill Downs when Harvey Wallbanger broke through in Race 7. The Kenny McPeek trainee ran second in his three previous starts, the last two times out as the favorite. He does like to hang late and won despite that under the Twin Spires. By Congrats, the $50,000 purchase -- McPeek is known for finding value -- is out of a Distorted Humor mare.
