Trainer Dale Romans said Wednesday that he has opted for Saratoga's Grade 3, $200,000 Amsterdam with the speedy Promises Fulfilled, who set the early pace in this year's Kentucky Derby. Entries will be taken this afternoon for the Saturday race.

Monmouth Park's publicity department indicated Romans was considering both Promises Fulfilled and Mr. Freeze, the recent Iowa Derby runner-up, for Sunday's Grade 1 Haskell Invitational. Romans said he'll pass on the Haskell.

That leaves a prospective field of seven runners in the summer classic, with the group headed by reigning 2-year-old champion Good Magic. Other contenders include Bravazo, second in the Preakness Stakes; Ohio Derby winner Core Beliefs, runner-up Lone Sailor, plus local horses Navy Commander, Roaming Union and Golden Brown.

Entries will be taken Thursday for the Haskell.

Since the Derby, Promises Fulfilled, a son of the Romans-trained Shackleford, ran third in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens on Belmont Stakes day after clicking through an opening half mile in a blazing 43.68 seconds. The Amsterdam runs at 6 1/2 furlongs, a sixteenth of a mile shorter than the Woody Stephens.
Going back to February, Promises Fulfilled punched his ticket to the Kentucky Derby by winning Gulfstream Park's Grade 2 Fountain of Youth in wire-to-wire fashion.
