Trainer Chad Brown, who inherited Gronkowski before his runner-up effort in the Belmont Stakes, recently received another top 3-year-old who could target some big races later this year in New York.
According to the Daily Racing Form, owner Larry Best, who runs horses under the OXO Equine banner, transferred Kentucky Derby fourth-place finisher Instilled Regard to Brown.
“I thought he could hang out at Belmont and see how long it takes to get him back into condition,” Best told DRF. “I’d like to get him in the races in late July, but it could be August.”
That makes Instilled Regard a logical candidate for both the July 28 Jim Dandy and Aug. 25 Travers Stakes at Saratoga.
Best, who told DRF he'll still have horses in Hollendorfer's care, made the move with few top tests for sophomores on the West Coast the second half of the year. The owner is looking even past 2018 with Instilled Regard, a son of Arch who rallied at odds of 85-1 in the Derby and created a $19,000 payout on the $1 Superfecta.
That the colt would go off at such a high price seemed unlikely months prior. After battling with McKinzie and Solomini in the Los Alamitos Futurity, Instilled Regard dominated in Fair Grounds' Lecomte to open 2018. From there, however, he was fourth in both the Louisiana Derby and Santa Anita Derby before rebounding in the big one.
