Untrapped, who finished 12th in the 2017 Kentucky Derby and went on to win the Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby last September, was euthanized Monday due to laminitis, BloodHorse's Alicia Hughes reported
.
Owner Michael Langford told BloodHorse that Untrapped "would not have a very good success rate of recovering" after spending time at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital to treat colic, then developing the inflammation as a complication.
""It was just kind of a bad deal," Langford said. "I didn't want him to suffer, no one did. I think we absolutely did the right thing, but I hate it for him."
A 4-year-old son of Trappe Shot, Untrapped last raced May 18, finishing second to Irish War Cry in the Grade 3 Pimlico Special. The Steve Asmussen trainee worked out as recently as June 10 at Churchill Downs.
While he won just the single graded race, Untrapped was highly consistent. In 16 starts, all but two of them stakes, he only twice finished worse than fourth -- in the Kentucky Derby along with his final prep for it, the Arkansas Derby.
