Connections to Mendelssohn, who New York Racing Association stakes coordinator Andrew Byrnes said was undeclared for a race earlier this month, appears to have their next spot picked.
The son of Scat Daddy was nominated to the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes -- and only the Dwyer -- for the July 7 card at Belmont Park, where that same day the Grade 1 Belmont Derby Invitational runs on turf.
Trainer Aiden O'Brien has said Mendelssohn would run domestically leading up to his try at the Breeders' Cup Classic following a last-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, in which the horse was swiped leaving the gate and again into the clubhouse turn.
The Dwyer could require some gate speed, as the $300,000 race is run at a mile and should include, among others, Enticed, who's proven at the distance and also rested since the Derby.
Other Kentucky Derby runners nominated include Firenze Fire and Noble Indy.
As for the Belmont Derby Invitational, My Boy Jack should switch to turf for a race to take on other top 3-year-olds including Analyze It and Catholic Boy.
Following the Dwyer, Mendelssohn is expected to run in the Sept. 22 Pennsylvania Derby as well.
