Girvin, who on Saturday worked toward a start in the upcoming Cornhusker Handicap, didn't appear in the entries the following afternoon. And now we know why.
Connections announced Tuesday the Grade 1 winner, who finished 13th in the 2017 Kentucky Derby, has been retired due to a soft tissue injury.
“Girvin gave me and my family experiences we will always cherish,” said owner Brad Grady. “We have been extremely fortunate to be around some superior horses, but Girvin was the best. His racing chapter has ended, but we are looking forward to another chapter beginning.”
Girvin's career highlights came with a trio of graded stakes victories at age 3 in the Risen Star (G2), Louisiana Derby (G2) and Haskell Invitational (G1). As recently as Saturday, trainer Joe Sharp talked highly of what was ahead -- hopefully a Grade 1 score as an older horse and a try at the Breeders' Cup Classic.
“Girvin did everything we ever asked him to do," Sharp said. "We always believed in Girvin from day one and the memories he gave me and my team will last a lifetime.”
A son of Tale of Ekati, Girvin made one start this year, in the Steve Sexton Mile (G3). Both the horse in front of him (Bee Jersey) and behind (Shotgun Kowboy) were next-out graded stakes winners, giving hope heading into the Cornhusker Handicap.
Stud plans were not mentioned Tuesday for the earner of more than $1.6 million from 10 lifetime starts.
