As Justify's connections contemplate the Triple Crown winner's next race spot, they know full well what awaits if heading to the Haskell Invitational.
Speaking Saturday from the Monmouth Park winner's circle, where he was celebrating Funtastic's score in the Grade 1 United Nations Stakes, trainer Chad Brown confirmed Good Magic will bring him back for the July 29 Haskell.
“He’s doing really well," Brown said of the 2-year-old champion, who was a runner-up in the Kentucky Derby and challenged Justify through the Preakness Stakes' early fractions.
Good Magic has posted four workouts since the middle jewel of the Triple Crown series, most recently clicking through five furlongs Saturday at Belmont Park in 1:00.80.
“I was really pleased with it," Brown said of the drill. "He’s right on target to run in the Haskell. We’re excited to bring him down.”
Brown is in search of his first victory in the 1 1/8-mile Haskell. The race offers a $1 million purse, but the stakes could be raised in an effort to lure Justify. Trainer Bob Baffert has said the unbeaten colt could work within the next week.
D. Wayne Lukas mentioned Bravazo as a possibility for the Haskell, which runs the same weekend as Saratoga's Jim Dandy (G2). My Boy Jack is expected to run it after trying turf in next weekend's Belmont Derby Invitational (G1), while Supreme Aura's a Haskell contender, too, after winning Monmouth's Pegasus Stakes (G2) back on June 17.
