Following a brief freshening, reigning 2-year-old champion Good Magic will next target the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational, trainer Chad Brown told the Albany Times-Union
.
The Kentucky Derby runner-up last out challenged Justify on the front end of the Preakness Stakes before fading late to fourth. Brown wasn't a fan of the ride Good Magic received.
"He didn't give up," the trainer said. "I know this horse very well and he's not a horse to be on the lead. No way. You guys [reporters] asked me all week what I wanted to do – sit off the pace and follow [Justify] around the track. And he's following us around."
Perhaps we could see a rematch, as Hall of Famer Bob Baffert often points his top 3-year-olds to the 1 1/8-mile Haskell, run this year on Sunday, July 29. American Pharoah was the most-recent of Baffert's record eight Haskell winners making his first start following a Triple Crown sweep.
The Derby's third-place finisher, Audible, and My Boy Jack, who ran fifth, are also said to be under Haskell consideration.
Good Magic, a $1 million son of Curlin, has won two of his seven career starts, with the victories at key times. The colt broke his maiden in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and triumphed in Keeneland's Blue Grass Stakes (G2) to secure his trip to the Derby.
