Bolt d'Oro to receive time off following Met Mile defeat

Bolt d'Oro, after hitting the board in the first six starts to open his career, has run 12th (Kentucky Derby) and 11th (Met Mile) in his most-recent two races. The colt will freshen up over the next two months as a result, it was announced Thursday.
Owner and trainer Mick Ruis' newly purchased Kentucky land -- 163-acre Chestnut Farm -- will house the multiple Grade 1 winner during his time off.
Spendthrift Farm is tagged in the tweet, as the nearby operation purchased Bolt d'Oro's breeding rights following a 2-year-old campaign in which the colt won both the Del Mar Futurity (G1) and FrontRunner Stakes (G1).
In the Met Mile, run on last Saturday's Belmont Stakes undercard, Bolt d'Oro ran last despite carrying less weight than his older rivals in the race. Under jockey Florent Geroux, the colt came under urging through the turn and only backed up from there.
It was a puzzling result after Bolt d'Oro was afforded an excuse in the Kentucky Derby. Ruis said his horse, a $650,000 purchase, simply didn't take to the slop at Churchill Downs.
Also at 3, Bolt d'Oro was awarded a win in his comeback race after bumped late by McKinzie in the San Felipe (G2). He also ran second by three lengths to eventual Triple Crown winner Justify in the Santa Anita Derby (G1).
