The second and final day of the Fasig Tipton Sale at
Saratoga has concluded and after reviewing pedigree vs. conformation vs. demeanor in the ring, I have picked out my favorites.
Like I did the night before, I had already gone over pedigrees, and looked to see who was well built and had the
best reactions to the crowd on hand. Several horses impressed me in separate
areas. Some had good breeding, some had good temperaments, some had strong, durable
looking builds, but the ones that really caught my attention were hips 97, 100,
105, 108, 112, 134, 138, and 150, with my very favorites being 97, 100, 112, 134,
138.
Those five all had, what I thought was not just very solid
pedigrees, but near royal. Hip #97 was by Malibu Moon, sire of Derby winner Orb,
among many other grade one winners. She is out of Street Sounds, a mare by
Dubai World Cup winning Street Cry, who also sired a Kentucky Derby winner in
Street Sense. If this pedigree doesn’t say stamina and classic distances I
don’t know what does.
In the ring, I was very surprised to learn that this colt
was a May foal, because the maturity of his build suggested otherwise. He was
compact, but at the same time very proportionate. He had strong hind quarters
and to the eye, looked like a very correct colt. His temperament in the ring,
also would have led many to believe he was older, as he acted extremely
professional and calm, while keeping an alert eye out, taking in his
surroundings.
Hip #100 was by Awesome Again out of an AP Indy mare, who’s
second damn was by Nijinsky II. Again, a very stamina oriented pedigree. She
had a very, strong yet sleek build. Her neck had a lovely crest to it that tied
in to her shoulders quite well. Her hindquarters had a strong look to them,
overall, she was very proportionate, and I love her build. She, like Hip 97,
also was very good in the ring, acting professional yet alert and curious, but
also had a very forward, purposeful way about her.
Hip #112 was one I was very interested in seeing, after I
took a look at the pedigree. By Bernardini, whose sire is the great AP Indy,
out of Tweeter, whom is by Unbridled’s Song. His second dam has foaled several
very good racer’s including champion and Kentucky Oaks winner Bird Town. So, by
now, it is quite obvious as to why I was so excited about this one.
Upon entering, I noticed how closely he resembled his sire,
Bernardini. He was big bodied and strong, with good bone and a very commanding
attitude. Normally, I dislike it if I see a horse who seems to be acting out,
but his actions seemed more to assert dominance over his handler than actual
nerves.
Hip #134 didn’t steal the bidding show, but Coffee Pot
Stables sure go her for a bargain price. I wasn’t sure what to expect, seeing
as she from the first crop of sire, First Dude (pictured above), but when she walked into the
ring I fell in love. She had a lovely smooth gait to her that covered tons of
ground. She was tall and very leggy, but still showed good bone and muscle. One
will not easily miss this flashy filly, as a couple of her four stockings
qualify her to be a paint. Overall, she had a very relaxed but alert expression
on.
Hip #138 was another that blew me away based on looks. I didn’t have the Malibu Moon colt on my initial list, but he sure made one big impression. He had a regal carriage to him, with a strong but sleek body. He was a classic Thoroughbred, leggy, but despite their length, they had good bone and his body fit them well, and had just enough flesh to where he fit them perfectly. He, like Hip #112, had a bit of a domineering attitude.
Of the night I would say my two favorites were Hips 112 and 134. If their dominant attitudes carry over to the track and they prove to have the talent that their pedigrees suggest, then it is quite possible they will make some very fine race horses.
