Breeders' Cup Longshots

No waxing poetic this week folks…..it’s finals time!  We’ve been studying all year for the two-day comprehensive exam known as the Breeders’ Cup.  Over the next few days I’ll share my selections for all the races, but today is about a wager that I utilize on big race days when fields are large and contentious: the 10-cent superfecta.  The 10-cent super allows players to build massive tickets for minimal cost, where 1 or 2 correct opinions during the course of the Breeders’ Cup will put them in the black.  One of my favorite variations is to find a horse that is 10-1 or greater and wheel them in 3rd and 4th (maybe 2nd) with other contenders.  For example, a 3x1x5x7 ($6), 3x5x1x7 ($6) and 3x5x7x1 ($6) can give you a lot of coverage for only $18.  Normally with this play, if I don’t wheel my key horse 2nd in the superfecta, I may wheel him in the place spot of exactas with the 3 horses on the top line of my superfecta wheels (depending on the will pays).  Let’s take a look at some horses I’ve pinpointed that could be great candidates for these “reverse pyramid” superfecta wheels this weekend.

Juvenile Fillies Turf-#2 Dayatthespa (12-1)
Dayatthespa was the only horse to last through a contentious speed dual last out, in what was arguably the most important prep for this race, the Grade 3 Natalma Stakes at Woodbine.  She has tactical speed, well drawn and should be able to get a piece of this purse.

Juvenile Turf-#2 Fantastic Song (20-1)

Fantastic Song ran wide the entire way, into a dawdling pace in his last race, the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont.  Previous to that, Fantastic Song won first time out at Saratoga going 2 turns, breaking from the far outside (a rare feat) while defeating fellow BC participant, #10 Animal Spirits (8-1 morning line).  After his Saratoga try, Animal Spirits captured the Grade 3 Bourbon Stakes at Keeneland.  This is a wide open race, so use as many as you’d like, for a 10-cent superfecta could be an IRS score.  At 20-1 or higher, I may contemplate a win wager as well.

4,5,13/2/4,5,7,8,13/4,5,7,8,10,13,14=$6

4,5,13/4,5,7,8,13/4,5,7,8,10,13,14/2=$6 Grand Total $18
Whoever you decide to bet on this weekend, think about playing around with 10-cent superfectas.  There are many variations of this wager that can make your Breeders’ Cup profitable for the cost of lunch.
