My first trip to Fair Grounds Race Course was filled with great stakes action and exciting finishes. Highlighted by Monomoy Girl's scintillating win in the Rachel Alexandra (G2) and Bravazo's 21-1 upset in the Risen Star (G2), America's oldest racetrack was the place to be on Saturday!
2017 Kentucky Derby runner up Lookin At Lee made his 4-year-old debut in the third race. Unfortunately, it was not his day, finishing last of five.
Holding Gold made his first start since the Breeders' Cup a winning one. His victory in the Colonel Power was a likely prep for the Al Quoz Sprint on the Dubai World Cup undercard.
Blinkers seemed to do the trick for the popular The Player, who romped by 4 1/4 lengths in the Mineshaft Handicap (G3).
Who rode The Player?!
Mom's On Strike came from the clouds to win her fourth straight in the Albert M. Stall Memorial over 46-1 shot Vagabond Shoes.
Monomoy Girl put in quite the performance in her sophomore debut, missing the break and trailing by seven lengths before sweeping to a 2 1/2-length score in the Rachel Alexandra (G2).
Nine-month layoff? No problem! Synchrony returned in the Fair Grounds Handicap (G3) in style, handing Mr. Misunderstood his first defeat over the grass.
The very handsome Bravazo prior to the Risen Star (G2).
The eventual Risen Star trifecta of Noble Indy, Snapper Sinclair and Bravazo battle for the early lead in their soon-to-be reverse order of finish.
Miguel Mena gives his successful pick up mount a pat on the neck. The duo will meet again in the Louisiana Derby!
